V1 Day!

GameGuru-Logo - news scale

Welcome to the GameGuru weekly news. This week sees the project hit a key milestone as it comes out of Early Access and releases fully on to Steam.

We’re very proud to announce the release of GameGuru Version 1, as well as the release of six DLC packs to expand your media collections.  If you were one of our amazing supporters who originally pledged to support GameGuru when it was known as “FPS Creator Reloaded”, one or more of these packs will be available to you for free as part of your pledge deal.

You can read all about the new and exciting features you’ll receive as part of Version 1 a little later, but we’re sure you’ll be pleased with this, the first major step towards the creation of the world’s easiest game maker!

Version 1 is here!

GameGuru has changed a lot recently with many new and exciting features. This has all been heading towards the first major milestone in the GameGuru development process and we’re pleased to announce the very first full release, taking GameGuru out of Steam Early Access and into version 1.01.

Version 1.01 is a big advancement, even when compared to the last early access release and it introduces many improved editor features, including the much requested character creator, an excellent and friendly new tool that enables you to design your own characters and quickly and easily add them to your own games. We supply you with some templates to get you started and will be making more choices available as we continue to improve and expand GameGuru.

Please don’t worry about us coming out of Early Access. We are 100% committed to GameGuru and have long term plans to expand and improve it. We felt it was the right time to come out of Early Access and to start promoting GameGuru as a complete game maker. You can be sure we’ll be releasing regular updates just like we’ve done since we launched on Steam earlier this year.

Third Person Gaming!

Today we’re also introducing a new perspective to GameGuru – adding support for 3rd person to the existing 1st person view. You can gain access to the first example of this mode with a new wizard character that comes FREE as part of the GameGuru V1.01 update! If you then purchase the new Fantasy DLC pack you’ll be able to build an amazing environment around him with the new Aztec and jungle assets.

3rd person

Here we’ve placed the wizard character in a level made from the jungle assets from the Fantasy DLC. There are many fantasy enemies to battle in the level and this starts the whole third person gaming experience in GameGuru.

future

As you can see from the above screenshot, version 1.01 also introduces a brand new decal system that allows game makers to immerse their players by adding animated effects to their games. We’re providing 20 decals from a mix of genres to get you started, you can also find many more in a new range of Mega Pack DLCs that are released today.

Tutorial System

We’ve also taken the opportunity to introduce a very helpful interactive tutorial system to help new users get started with GameGuru. Over time we plan to expand the tutorials this system can provide. We’ve also included 24 environmental maps to kickstart your game creation – these maps come from our talented community and are a great place to start.

Competition News

As many of you will recall, we hosted a competition last month to design some impressive outdoor maps which would allow users to kickstart their own developments.  In the end, we felt that all entries were worthy winners and have awarded prizes to everyone who entered. All small maps won $50, and all large maps $100. Here are a couple of screenshots from just two of the entrants:

GameGuru-Logo - news scale

Welcome to a slightly shorter than normal news update. The whole team is focused on preparing a very exciting new build for all GameGuru users that will add new levels of functionality and open up the engine by introducing the start of 3rd person game creation. We’ll be expanding on this feature in weeks and months to come, as we’re sure you’re all aware, this is a massive area of game making and one that we will want to do full justice to.

As well as continuing work on 3rd person play, we are now putting the finishing touches to the Character Creator as well as introducing a new tutorial system built into GameGuru itself. As you can see from this screenshot, the Character Creator is now fully integrated into GameGuru and we’re just running some final tests at the moment.

Competition News

Recently we ran two competitions and the results for the 1st one (The Great Outdoors) are now in. We had a difficult time judging – in the end we decided that all valid entries were so good, that everyone should win!

We’ll publish a complete list on the forums soon, but if you entered a small map for the competition you will win $50, and all large maps entered will win $100. We’ve also chosen a selection of the winners to have their maps included in the next build of GameGuru and these will be featured as tutorial levels, showcasing GameGuru as well as the amazing talent of our community. Don’t worry if your level wasn’t chosen for inclusion, but we simply didn’t have room for every one of them and wanted to include a wide selection of designs as possible.

Weapons and Characters moving forward

GameGuru-Logo - news scale

Hello and welcome to the weekly GameGuru news.

Once again the development team has been hard at work with a large number of tweaks and fixes. We’ve been focusing on stability and weapons in the last week as well as making great headway with the new character creator!

As a small teaser of the work on this great feature, we’re sharing the first ever screenshot of it. We’re sure you’ll agree it’s shaping up to be a very exciting addition which we expect to bring to you soon.

cc

With the Character Creator you can edit many properties. From changing the character’s head style to colouring and choosing facial hairs. Characters can be male or female and you can choose clothing styles, skin colouring and extras like hats. You’ll also be able to map your own image onto one the heads and become part of the game! So soon you can start multiplayer sessions and play as you against your friends, we think this will be an awesome new feature.

It’s super easy to use and developed to be expandable in the future.

Remember, this is work in progress and subject to change!

You can read all about the new additions at the end of this bulletin, but we’d like to report on some feedback from Lee regarding some requests for a ‘roadmap’. We asked him to layout some of the plans for the future and to give you all an idea of the direction we intend to take GameGuru

Lee reported last week in his blog:

“Right now my road map is to add a third person control system, improve and extend the character AI, add a simple inventory system, player progression statistics, character conversation engine and a better way to associate entity logic (i.e. key + door). Sprinkled in all that is the daily grind to fix issues as they occur which slows down the addition of the new stuff. As for an estimate how long this will take, I would guess a date sometime in June, with many builds released as each feature is added.

The longer term road map includes improvements to the game itself such as better explosions, fire, smoke, particle effects and debris, a constant stream of new content both in the core product and through the store and DLCs, the addition of big features such as swimming and underwater action, vehicles, destruction system, new kinds of weapons and player abilities, composite entities so several entities can club together to form a single larger entity and the list of ‘definitely going to do’ goes on. We then stray into the ‘might do’ list which includes replacing the light mapper with something that runs in the background all the time, eliminating the delay between clicking test game and playing the game, optimizing the media when saving a standalone executable, vehicles that fly, underground and cave systems that can cut through the terrain, a water pools system for different water bodies at different heights in the landscape, weather systems, day and night cycle, third party plug-in system tied with LUA, engine optimizations and load time reductions. The longest road-map then extends into supporting more platforms and form factors, both desktop and portable devices. Along the way we may also be distracted by cool technology like Virtual Reality, Hands-Free control systems, dedicated multi-monitor support such as EyeFinity and as yet undiscovered gaming hardware.”

First off, Velociraptor by Gtox

Next on our list of critters is this animated snake for Dagored

Last on the list of this weeks critters showcases is these flying crows and swooping seagulls for Lafette really add a sense of life to your levels. No video this time, but these birds both fly and glide around the maps very realistically.

GameGuru Updates

GameGuru received two updates in the last week. Each adding additional functionality and fixing a few issues that were reported by users.

V1.00.026

This small release focused on multiplayer and co-op fixes, it always prepared the engine internally for some updates to come.

Core fixes included a fix for an issue caused by a recent Steam update, and tweaks to allow custom characters in co-op play.

V1.00.027

This more substantial release updated the default weapons, with improved function and smoother gameplay.  In addition further fixes to the engine improved player movement and tweaked the lightmapper for a more stable performance.

You can read all the information on the latest releases by following the links above.

Co-op play is here!

GameGuru-Logo - news scale

We had a great time last week with two big updates adding a lot of requested features. We’ve concentrated on improving the editing experience for all users as well as opening the door for more advanced weapons, something that many of our store artists have been asking for. We expect these additions to start the ball rolling on many exciting store additions soon. You can see a teaser of one of these weapons here.

EAI

In addition to these improvements we’ve also adding an exciting co-op mode for team based multiplayer. You can read more on this and details of a competition based on co-op play below.

Competition 1 – The Great Outdoors.

It’s that time again and we’re doubling up this time. Welcome to our 5th and 6th level design competitions. This time we’re taking you to the great outdoors and giving all of our talented users new and old a chance to win $50 or $100 and the possibility for your level to be included in a future release of GameGuru in the process.

This time we are looking for a total of 30 winners. Yes that’s right 30 winners and we are asking you to design the best outdoor maps you can using just stock media. We want to see you create forests, plains, jungles, wastelands, even gardens, anything you can think of that comes under the category The Great Outdoors.

You may choose from 2 map sizes for your entry, we are looking for 20 x small maps and 10 x large maps.

1) Small maps may be of any size below approximately half of the editor area.

Every small map winner will receive $50

2) 10 x Large maps which MUST cover the entire usable editor area.

Every Large map winner will receive $100

How should I design my map?

We don’t want to see cityscapes, that will be something for another time, for now we are challenging you to use media that fits into the following type:

Foliage (trees, flowers, plants, etc).

Rocks (any of the default rocks)

Debris (anything that counts as debris, this DOESN’T include buildings or ruins).

You can sculpt the terrain to include hills, mountains, lakes and rivers).

You can use any of the default Grasses.

You should enclose your maps, preventing the player from leaving the playing area, using water, sculpted terrain, rocks, etc. Feel free to use your imagination for ways to do this.

You MAY not use:

A) Scripts of any kind
B) Characters
C) Any Buildings
D) Any Custom media, except as stated below:

PLEASE DO NOT lightmap your levels, this makes the FPM too large for easy testing.

The one exception to the default media rule for this one, is that users are allowed to submit their own custom terrains. Please include a game ready terrainbank folder with your entry should you want to take advantage of this.

As always,

The Rules

1) You may only use default media that comes with GameGuru

2) You MAY NOT use any other media, custom scripts, music or audio effects. Just the content that ships with GameGuru.

3) You CAN only use the default Skyboxes that ship with GameGuru

4) You MAY use custom terrains as well as those that ship with GameGuru

5) You must either enter your level as Small or Large

7) Please email just the (mapfiles (FPM’s) located in the mapbank folder) to Dave Hawkins at scenecommanderTGC@gmail.com. Remember to include any custom terrain.

Ensure you use the format USER – SIZE – FORUM -COMPETITION5.

e.g thescenecommander-steam-large – competition5 in the subject line.

Entries that do not meet this criteria will be disqualified.

8) You must include the following information in your email.

8.1) Your real name

8.2) A valid email for an active PayPal account as we cannot offer cash prizes via any other means

The map file “FPM” (attached to the email). Map files are stored here; Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Game Guru/Files/Mapbank

9) All entries must be received by midnight GMT 30th April 2015.

10) This competition IS NOT open to any member of TheGameCreators staff or support team.

11) You MAY enter as many times as you like, but remember quality is better than quantity.

12) The competition will be judged by at least two members of TheGameCreators staff and their decision will be final.

Competition 2 – Co-op fun.

To go hand in hand with our The Great Outdoors competition, we’re also launching a 6th level design competition. This time we’re asking you to create a small and fun co-op game. We’re looking for levels that are designed to be completed by 2 players, working together and providing around 5 minutes of gameplay using just default media.

We’re after 5 winners and we’re offering $250 and 5,000 store points to each winner and a chance for your game to be included in a future release of GameGuru.

What should my game be like?

That’s more or less up to you, but we want you to keep it small and fun. You can choose any genre supported by the default media and use any scripts or audio effects that come with GameGuru.

* You may NOT use any Custom media.
* PLEASE DO NOT lightmap your levels, this makes the FPM too large for easy testing.

The Rules

1) You may only use default media that comes with GameGuru

2) You MAY NOT use any other media, custom scripts, music or audio effects. Just the content that ships with GameGuru.

3) You can only use the default Skyboxes that ship with GameGuru

4) You may only use the terrain textures that ship with GameGuru

5) Please email just the (mapfiles (FPM’s) located in the mapbank folder) to Dave Hawkins at scenecommanderTGC@gmail.com

Entries that do not meet this criteria will be disqualified.

6) You must include the following information in your email.

6.1) Your real name

6.2) A valid email for an active PayPal account as we cannot offer cash prizes via any other means

The map file “FPM” (attached to the email). Map files are stored here; Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Game Guru/Files/Mapbank

7) All entries must be received by midnight GMT 30th April 2015.

8) This competition is not open to any member of TheGameCreators staff or support team.

9) You may enter as many times as you like, but remember quality is better than quantity.

10) The competition will be judged by at least two members of TheGameCreators staff and their decision will be final.

That’s it, please feel free to email me with any questions for either competition and good luck.

Store News

The store is approaching a new milestone, being just slightly short of a very respectable 4000 items available either to buy or for free, a point we are sure to pass in the next day or so.

We are also very pleased to see such a wide range of genres now being supported by our talented artists. This week, we’re taking a look at some of the great construction packs. Let’s have a look at just a small selection of what’s available.

skywriter

Medieval Fort Construction Set Vol 1 by SkyWriter – This excellent and versatile pack is ideal for fantasy and historical games as well as serving for such things as post apocalyptic games (fortified towns, etc.).

chris

This great  sci-fi tunnel pack from store artist Kasseyus would be an excellent addition to a media collection. Consisting of 8 sections, these tunnels can be clipped together to create hundreds of variations.

WOIwalls

Wizard of Id’s Sci-fi wall pack, is another pack that’s been available for awhile, but may have slipped your notice. These walls span several genres, and although designed with sci-fi in mind they would fit well in near future or post apocalyptic games.

Game Guru Updates

V1.00.024

For this release, we made a number of improvements to the editor and we’ve added more weapons features which will enable artists to create more dynamic guns for GameGuru. A new and exciting feature is the Multiplayer co-op support in this version. So lots to get your teeth into!

Editor

There’s a big change in the way entities are now placed down. An entity is placed into the scene with a left click, there is no extra copy left on the cursor. If you do want to place multiple copies down then use SHIFT and left click. At any time you can press the Delete key to remove the entity from the mouse. We have implemented this so that the Right Mouse Button is always available for Free Flight mode.

Other Editor changes;

  • Allowed free flight mouselook even when entity has been selected by cursor
  • When pressing F after moving from center, the view will correctly zoom into current location
  • When moving an entity under the terrain, substitute with a wireframe marker so it doesn’t get lost and can be edited
  • In right mouse button mode, there’s no longer a shift in the entity attached to the cursor
  • The free flight mode is now reset when a new level is loaded
  • GameGuru no longer responds to keys when the main IDE does not have focus
  • Widget now appears at the point of clicking, not the entity centre
  • Added new TUTORIALS menu in main IDE for direct links to getting started videos
Multiplayer Co-op mode

Now you can create co-op games with GameGuru! All you need to do is create a level that has eight multiplayer start markers that are all set to the same team. Then add some enemy bot characters and run Multiplayer mode. The game will be hosted and run as a co-op level. When all the enemies are killed then the game will end and you’ll see a results screen to see how well each player did.

We’ve also made it impossible for AI Bots to hurt each other in both single and multiplayer modes.

There are no co-op levels at this time. We will be running a competition within the community very soon to get some made.

The GameGuru Lua scripting language has had these commands added to it;

  • GetCoOpMode() – it returns 1 if co-op mode is active.
  • GetCoOpEnemiesAlive() – returns the number of enemies still alive in the game

Test Level Mode
  • Removed debug log entry when loading LM based levels (loading speed-up)
  • Software now saves AI obstacle data generated in test game for faster loading. With this change The Big Escape on one dev PC used to take 72 second to load, now down to 40 seconds
  • Added a prompt when pressing E in F9 mode when there are no entities in the level
  • When using an entity that has a SCALE value, allow F9 mode to place at the right size
  • HUD IMAGE prompt no longer shows when F9 Edit mode is active
Zombies
  • Added extra script logic for melee/zombie attacks, need to now SEE the player
  • Changed Zombie scripts so they stop attacking if they cannot see player
Weapons
  • Added VWEAPTEX field to GUNSPEC to provide specific texture for held weapons
  • STATUSPANELCODE = 0-colt,1-magnum,2-uzi,3-shotgun,4-rifle,5-rpg,6-grenade,7-bow,8-mace,9-stone,10-sword
  • New STATUSPANELCODE=100 will force use of AMMO.PNG and ICON.PNG in gunfolder
  • Added zoomaccuracy, zoomaccuracybreathkey, zoomaccuracybreath, zoomaccuracyheld to GUNSPEC
  • zoomaccuracy; the amount of swaying the weapon makes during zoom mode
  • zoomaccuracybreathkey; the keystate code the weapon detects to steady the zoom accuracy sway
  • zoomaccuracybreath; the time in milliseconds the weapon can be steadied in one go
  • zoomaccuracyheld; the percentage of steadiness the weapon can be held motionless
  • The PUTAWAY sound effect for weapons is no longer cut short when swapping guns
  • Weapon Ammo Panel now flashes red in error when weapon is jammed
  • When collect weapon with ammo included, fixes double ammo for sharedammo types
  • When weapon is on the last bullet, now supports LAST START FIRE + LAST FINISH FIRE
  • When entering and exiting zoom with no bullets, EMPTY ZOOMTO/FROM anims now used
  • When switching TO/FROM ALT weapon mode, now supports empty variants of animation

 V1.00.25

A recent update to the Steam client broke our multiplayer system. This is now fixed in this latest build.

Also fixed and added tothis version;

  • Updated CITYSCAPE entities to reset any ROTY rotations causing odd angles
  • Adjusted free flight ANGX cap to 89.999 so transition from G to F smooth
  • When repeat a test game, some weapons will put ammo in clip, not in gun
  • When using Font at 150%, editor now correctly aligns cursor
  • Added ZOOMHOLDBREATH=16 to SETUP.INI to externally control hold breath key
  • Changed zoomaccuracybreathkey to zoomaccuracybreathHOLD flag to disable breath
  • Added support for ALTICON.PNG and ALTAMMO.PNG in gun folder for status panels
  • Added support for DRYFIRE animation for weapons with no bullets to shoot
  • Added support for Zooming without available ammo (for scoping an area)
  • Added support for plrmovespeedmod, plrturnspeedmod, plrjumpspeedmod in gunspec
  • plrmovespeedmod; percentile for player speed when carrying weapon with ammo
  • plremptyspeedmod; percentile for player speed when carrying weapon with no ammo
  • plrturnspeedmod; percentile for player turning speed when carrying weapon
  • plrjumpspeedmod; percentile for player jumping height when carrying weapon
  • plrreloadspeedmod; percentile for player reload speed when carrying weapon
  • Added MELEE FORCE to gunspec to separately control physics force of melee hits
  • Fixed MELEE DAMAGE so it overrides regular DAMAGE of the native weapon
  • When jump, weapon animation speed is slowed drastically to avoid mid-air anims
  • Replaced VIDEO.MP4 with VIDEO.WMV which is the sole supported video format

Welcome to the start of a new week and we’re pleased to report some great progress.  You can read below about the amazing work our development team have crafted and the advancements made over the last seven days.

We also report on the latest GameGuru competition and announce the results.

We’re highlighting the work of some of our talented users, including some gallery screenshots of work in progress games and a great video.

You’ll also read of more exciting store news and of the latest updates as well as a reminder of some of the work of our longer standing artist.

So, without further ado…

Competition

The 4th GameGuru level design competition has drawn to a close and this was our most exciting and well subscribed of them all to date. As always, this was a difficult event to judge as we receive a lot of high quality entries. In the end, the team whittled the entries down to five winners. All winners receive $200 cash and 5,000 GameGuru Store points. We’ll be contacting the winners very soon with their prizes!

Although there is no direct prizes for positions, we felt that the winning entries should be in the following order.

FIRST Prize!- Construction Destruction – By Susysyay

construction

We loved this level for its great design and well thought out entity placement, it plays really well when there are 4 or more players running around this construction site themed level. A good solid design and it was clear a lot of care and attention went into it’s design.

2nd – Bridge Over Troubled Water – By Wizard of id

An exciting level of criss crossing bridges and tunnels with a central pool area that can be walked through.

wizofidcomp4

3rd – Limbo – By Slaur3n

A very clever and sureal level, featuring floating platforms and narrow slopes. The style of this game is unlike anything we’ve seen before. It was enjoyed by many of the development team.

limbo

4th – Firing Range – By Kravenwolf

This tightly packed level leads to some very exciting and fast paced gameplay. A clever use of box crates makes for a very different atmosphere. We had a lot of fun and laughed lots as RPGs took down many poor guys in and among the tight corners.

firingrange

5th – Hide & Seek – By E30Legend

Our final choice uses the players flashlight to great effect which accompanied with some good use of spooky sound effects makes this level very atmospheric.

hideandsec

Congratulations to everyone and many thanks to you all for entering, you’ve given us all a lot of fun as well as helping to develop GameGuru. The winning levels will soon be available in an updated version of GameGuru so you can all enjoy playing them.

Development Team – Teams up!

GameGuru-Logo - news scale

Welcome again to the GameGuru weekly news.

We have more updates to report as we’ve continued with a wave of improvements. Two updates last week with each one aimed at improving some very important areas. We also report on an exciting new multiplayer feature coming very soon. So…

Multiplayer mayhem teams up!

One the the most fun additions in the last week, both for the development team to add as well as play test has been the new Team Deathmatch feature. No longer will users be restricted to single player carnage, now you’ll be able to join a team to fight it out. Supporting up to 2 teams of 4, the default setting will be the first team to reach 30 kills being declared the winner.  Level designers will also be able to toggle friendly fire for those who feel their level isn’t dangerous enough.

We’re on the final stages of testing now and expect this great addition to be with all users early any day this week!

A lot of new media has been uploaded over the last few weeks, some of which we’ve already showcased, but we thought we’d give you a little more information about some of these great packs and assets by showing you some screenshots of the them in situ.

terraform

Abandoned Terra-forming Plant by Wolf

Wolf says:

This Model pack contains everything you need to design futuristic sci-fi colonies /camps.
They fit well in GameGurus’ terrain system and are gorgeous to design complex skylines.
The Pack features enough variation to even create little sci-fi towns.
This pack has leaned on retro-futuristic designs from the 70s and 80s but I kept it contemporary enough to fit in a more modern vision of the future.
Please note that while the focus of the pack was on worn and rusty assets I have also included a large amount of clean entities for games that are set in a brighter future!

ww2

World War 2 assets pack #2 by BSP

Part of BSP’s growing range of WW2 themed media, this pack is focused on indoor items. A total of 71 models, including bunker & chateau furniture and paintings, which you will find useful in not only World War 2 styled games, but a large number of more modern genres.

Eai

ErrantAI has a number of great packs on the store, the scene above was created from 3 of his packs, Billards Pack, Snack Attack Pack and his latest, Fibre Glass furniture pack.

All are excellent value and are valuable resource for any GameGuru user.

The 4th level design competition

As a reminder to all you budding level designers out there, the 4th level design competition draws to a close this Wednesday 18th March at midnight GMT.

We’ve already had a number of entries, but if you’re leaving it to the last minute to submit your level, don’t forget the deadline. So for your chance to win $200 and 5,000 store points and for the possibility  that your level be included in a future release of GameGuru, get creating now. We are looking to award prizes for the 5 best maps; so there’s several chances to win.

A final reminder of the rules;

The Rules

1) You may use any default media that comes with GameGuru.

2) You MAY NOT use any other media, custom scripts, music or audio effects. Just the content that ships with GameGuru.

3) You may only use the default Skyboxes that ship with GameGuru

4) You may only use the default terrains that ship with GameGuru

5) You can create your level for between 2 and 8 players. We’d advise you to avoid making levels too big and also too small.

6) You can only use the default weapons that ship with GameGuru. Note that weapons and ammo re-spawn during multi-player games so don’t go crazy placing down lots of weapons and ammo.

Here we are again, bringing another weekly update to a close.  For us here at TheGameCreators development this week will be divided into two. One will be focused on fixing lots of small niggles users have raised with us since GameGuru launched while on the other side we’ll be working more on multiplayer. So we hope to have some nice treats for both schools of GameGuru enthusiasts. You can expect these and other updates during this week.

As always don’t forget Lee blog in it’s new location here and thank you all for your awesome support.

So, until then, enjoy GameGuru and keep telling us what you’re up to and what you’d like to see as GameGuru develops.
